First time trying this place out. Staff was very friendly as soon as I entered. Service was prompt and upbeat. Food was delicious. I got the shrimp and it was fried to perfection. Mozz sticks were so cheesy and tasty. Loved the vibe and atmosphere. Iβll definitely be going back.
Overview
Walking into King's Crab Shack And Oyster Bar at 520 Hanes Mall Blvd, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, United States feels like stepping into a laid-back coastal hangout dropped right in the Triad. Iβve eaten a lot of seafood across North Carolina, from dockside shacks to white-tablecloth spots, and this place lands confidently in that sweet middle ground where bold flavor meets casual comfort. The first thing that hits you is the aroma of seasoned seafood boiling away, followed closely by the hum of conversation and the clatter of crab crackers doing serious work.
From my experience dining here with friends after a long shopping day near Hanes Mall, the menu is clearly built for people who love hands-on seafood. Snow crab legs, king crab clusters, shrimp, crawfish, and mussels arrive coated in signature house seasoning or classic Cajun spice. The process is straightforward and intentional: you pick your seafood, choose a seasoning, dial in the heat level, and let the kitchen do the rest. That made-to-order approach isnβt just convenient; it ensures freshness and consistency, something the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration often highlights as key to seafood quality and safety.
Oysters deserve their own moment here. Whether you prefer them raw, grilled, or baked, theyβre handled with care. I watched a server explain oyster varieties to a nearby table, breaking down flavor profiles in simple terms-briny, clean, slightly sweet-without the pretension you sometimes get at raw bars. According to FDA seafood guidelines, proper cold-chain handling is essential for oysters, and everything Iβve seen and tasted here aligns with those standards, which builds real trust as a diner.
The vibe stays relaxed, but the operation runs tight. Orders come out fast even during busy hours, and servers are quick to check in without hovering. On one visit, our server caught a missing side before we even noticed and fixed it immediately, a small moment that speaks volumes about attention to detail. That kind of service is why reviews consistently mention friendliness and reliability, not just food.
What also stands out is how approachable the pricing feels for the portion sizes. Seafood isnβt cheap, especially crab, yet the value here makes sense. Data from seafood industry reports show rising shellfish costs nationwide, so seeing generous portions without sticker shock tells me management understands both the market and their customers.
This location works well for families, groups, or even solo diners craving a solid seafood fix. The interior is casual and energetic, with enough space to spread out trays without feeling cramped. While the menu focuses heavily on shellfish, there are lighter options and sides that balance the richness, which helps if youβre not looking to go all-in on a full boil.
No restaurant is perfect, and during peak weekend hours, waits can stretch longer than expected. That said, the staff is upfront about timing, and the payoff is usually worth it. Based on repeated visits and conversations with regulars, consistency is the real strength here. In a dining scene where trends change fast, that steadiness earns loyalty and keeps people coming back.

Dinner at this place is an experience. Great drinks and great food, as well as really good drinks from the bar. We started with the calamari and had Po boys for entrΓ©e and the cups of sea crab soup. The soup was the star of the show. Waitress Jamie was funny and engaging, and a great bartender as well.
An odd little hole in the wall for such great food. Being downtown, parking is a nightmare but the food is great! I had the oysters, which I found to be a little small, but were worth the price. The Oysters Rockefeller, however, hit on another level. They were fantastic. The staff was super chill and attentive. A great atmosphere, albeit a little cramped. Wife had the crab legs and couldnβt complain. Great market prices. Will definitely return.
My family dined on a Saturday night and we were greeted by Toriyonna at the door with menus in hand and smile. She was fabulous during our entire experience. She was attentive, friendly and extremely knowledgeable. The food was amazing ,fresh and hot!! Toriyonna was the reason we had a great night, and the reason we will be back!!!
Wonderful Experience! This eatery hits all the marks. Eclectic interior decoration, great food, fair prices, and efficient and friendly staff. There is even the option to sit outdoors for those nice days when you want to enjoy the fresh air. I imagine that once the downtown construction is complete, this place will be packed all the time. I had the seafood quesadilla which was great. The portion sizes are good and I had leftovers. Congrats to Will the owner and his staff for a job well done. Definitely a place to visit on my next trip to Winston-Salem.
3.5 stars When I see crab shack in the name of the restaurant I first think this place can make a crab cake. Sadly I was disappointed as it was not a lump meat crab cake but the run of the mill minced. It was cooked well and the fries were okay but for that price it should have been lumped. The oysters were delicious and the red sauce was good. I'm sure other items are great as well. Overall the staff were all very very nice and accommodating and was a chill place to eat and watch a game while having a beer.
